Labels: ,

Technology convergence is a new trend and has you ever wonder that one day your laptop may be equipped with both 3G and WiFi wireless technologies so that it can be turned into a mobile access point used to connect to surrounding networked devices with internet access capabiliy via 3G cellular network infrastructure? It is a reality now with the new wireless module developed by Novatel that combines both 3G modem and 802.11a/b/g/n wireless technologies into one single chip for seamless connectivity in mobile computing world.

Novatel has planned to integrate this module into Dell’s mainstream E4300 notebook and that is how this information being leaked from the recent FCC filing. Further disclosure further revealed that the Mini card will be capable to support all 802.11a/b/g/n wireless technology while offering UMTS WWAN connectivity suitable for both home and office environments. No doubt, the convergence has able to shrink down the overall form factor for more flexible and low power platform design and more importantly, it creates an interesting new usage model of ability to turn your mobile machine into wireless access point so that these web browsing activities can be shared among other users just like conventional 3G/UMTS mobile router.

No pricing and availability yet, we should expect this tiny module to be adopted by other OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) without being limited for Dell E-series notebook alone in short future.
